拋開戰爭的正義性不談，這是一部優秀的戰爭題材電影，比國內絕大多數戰爭題材的電影好看的過，不論劇情，場面還是演技。在最后美軍攻擊大和號的時候，鬼子表現出來的歇斯底里和自戕的場面就和很多歷史書上描述的那樣，所以可以理解成對歷史的完美再現，如果是國內電影人拍的話不敢想象能拍出什么鬼樣子。
